KEATING LEADS BIPARTISAN LETTER TO RUSSIA REGARDING THE CONTINUED DETENTION OF PAUL WHELAN

July 8, 2021
Press Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Today, Chair Bill Keating lead a bipartisan letter signed by Rep. Haley Stevens, Ranking Member Michael McCaul, and 19 other Members of Congress to Russian Federation Ambassador Anatoly I. Antonov calling for the humane treatment and swift release of U.S. citizen Paul Whelan. Whelan has been incarcerated in Russia since 2018 when he was arrested, tried in a secret trial, and sentenced to 16 years imprisonment on unsubstantiated charges. Since his incarceration, Whelan has been repeatedly denied communication with his family and lacks access to needed medical care.

A copy of the letter can be found at this link, and Congressman Keating’s statement appears below:

“Paul Whelan has been imprisoned for more than nine hundred days on charges that the Russian government has yet to provide any evidence to support. Just last week, he was once again returned to a World War I-era labor camp after receiving inadequate treatment for his medical needs,” said Chair Keating. “Mr. Whelan deserves his freedom, and my colleagues and I are calling upon the Russian government to release Mr. Whelan and all other American political prisoners, including Trevor Reed. It is heartening that President Biden raised Mr. Whelan’s and Mr. Reed’s cases in his meeting with Putin last month, and we look forward to continued dialogue and progress on this front.”
